The point that I was going to make was that emotion certainly matters when you're playing sports. That's why rhythm and momentum (which I think you have mixed up) matter.
I'm not a big Herbstreit fan, but to say that 'momentum' does not exist shows a complete ignorance of competitive sports. As a guy who's considering playing baseball at the college level (D3) momentum definitely exists. When I strike out the first two guys of an inning the next batter definitely has a different thought process compared to when the first two guys up each get a hit. The confidence that is created by success on your side (or lost when the other team makes a great play) is what he calls momentum. If I'm pitching and my defense turns a double play and then I strike the next hitter out to end the inning, our hitters are going to come up to plate a lot more confident than they might have otherwise. It's the same way with football— if a defender makes an INT the entire defense will get fired up.
Hey Brad, normally I like your articles but these grades seem really off. A 'B' for the offense but only a 'B+' for the defense? Outside of the 2nd quarter, the last minute of regulation, and OT, did the offense gain 50 yards? For almost 3/4 of the game it was atrocious. The only reason 'Bama won is because of the defense. Those guys were incredible, especially when you consider how tired they must have been because of the T.O.P. discrepancy. C+ for the offense and at least an A for the defense, if not that A+.
and yes, I said 'our' even though my team circle (what is it called? a sticker?) is Vanderbilt. They are my favorite two schools (long story going back to when I first began paying attention to CFB) and, since they don't play each other that much, (and whenever they play I know who is going to win) I root for both. Considering that I'm from the Pacific Northwest it's not as if I was born in Tuscaloosa and have to be a Tide fan for life.
this is the problem with hiring Kiffin as our OC. He's a passing guy, while our strength has been running the ball. Considering that we have a first year starter, we should've been running even more. Kiffin's passing gameplan might work in the Pac12 or in nonconference play but it won't hold up in the SEC.
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the Pac12s 13-8 BCS bowl record isn't a .500 record.... Otherwise good article. As an SEC fan from Washington I hear a lot of Pac12 hype. As WSU is my favorite Pac12 team I was at the WSU game yesterday (last one in Seattle). Vanderbilt would have beaten them. Not that Vanderbilt looked good but WSU was worse.
Don't forget about Vanderbilt. They would probably have to beat you to get to 6-6
