Bama did win the SEC Championship, which is still a great accomplishment. When LSU lost 21-0 to Bama in a national championship rematch, I felt the same way about the Tigers.
Playing 8 conference teams reminds me of my time at LSU ('67-'72). We only played 6 conference games and the conference had 10 members. We always played 3 Southwest Conference teams, 4 in some years. It was almost like being in 2 conferences. However, we did not play the 2 SWC powers of those years--Texas and Arkansas.
You nailed it. I love football, but I watch more soccer now. There are no commercial stoppages, and no time outs. The clubs in Europe still make most of their money through TV rights, merchandise licensing, etc. And it is a LOT of money. The match official keeps track (roughly) of time lost due to injuries, substitutions, and other stoppages. This time is added on at the end of the half and the end of the game. Usually this amounts to about 5 extra minutes. The half times are 15 minutes and you genrally get advertising during that time, which also happens with college football.
Since both Kelly and Saban wanted Rees, then my guess is that he is very good. As for why Rees is leaving ND, sometimes it is difficult to work for a former peer who is promoted over you. Rees may have initially felt he could make it work, but as the year unfolded realized it was a mistake to stay. Probably not the sole factor, but may have made the decision a little easier when the Bama offer came.
Given the family influence, he was never going to LSU. After that--it could be any top tier school. Maybe Texas made a real good recruiting pitch. I'm sure the facilities are nice. Austin is a very nice place with a kind of hippie (I know, this dates me) subculture. That appeals to many.
Lots of comparisons to Kelly. However, Kelly did want to bring his OC with him from ND, but he (Tommy Rees) decided to stay put.
I remember the 1974 game well--listened on the radio. After Walker "skipped" (sorry) around end for a TD, John Ferguson, the LSU radio play-by-play announcer, exclaimed,"He's the fastest man on the field!" I thought that was rubbing it in a bit, as the LSU announcer. As I recall, Bellard lost a close game to LSU his first year, won a close one in 1974, and just about ran us out of Tiger Stadium the next year. Then he moved on to Mississippi State and repeated the process. Great coach--at least against LSU.
I like Jimbo's picks. There is a lot of history with LSU/TAM/MSU. Emory Bellard and Jackie Sherrill both coached at TAM and State. Bellard was our (LSU) nemesis at both places. Besides, I like the fight songs of TAM and State. Outside of maybe Vandy, nobody in the SEC is a "gimme" any more.
Now he's in trouble. Should have promoted Waffle House or some other Georgia based chain.
Those under 40 (50?) may not understand your comment, Yankeepig.
Harsin could bring success. When Saban came to LSU he had not been wildly successful to that point, and LSU was arguably in worse shape then than AU now.
