BTW see Mike Bianchi’s commentary in the Orlando Sentinel on UCF football after the BYU blowout to get an idea of the current perception of UCF football, Don’t get me wrong Heupel is a very good offensive coordinator. Not sure yet if he is successful at being a head coach. Wish the Vols all the best with this hire, but still think that UCF will be fine as well. I do agree that UCF needs a home run hire to keep up with Cincy
Did Heupel ever beat any SEC schools at UCF? And how much of Heupel’s success came from Frost’s recruiting and transfers? His recruiting was never better than 4th in the AAC despite all of the FLA talent. UCF will succeed because football is a priority from the Admin down. There are a lot of good upcoming coaches that will want to coach at UCF with all of the local talent.
Heupel left because his tenure at UCF was going sideways if not down and now he has an AD he can trust. Very possible if he had another average season at UCF the new AD would have fired him anyway. This could work good for UCF as noted. For UT? Don’t have a clue.
Need to go back and look at what White did at UCF. When Frost left he went for the offensive coordinator with a flashy offense as a HC. That was Josh Heupel at Mizzou. Appears he may do the same with the Clemson OC. Dykes is a good man and a decent coach, but if he could not succeed at Cal I don’t know how he would work at UT. Plus despite his abilities SMU is still a mid-pack AAC school. Heck they got blown out by ECU. Fleck, like Dykes, has no ties to the region and I don’t think is a good fit. Who knows, may be none of the three in the end, but if it is I think it is Elliott.
