I don't know why SDS will not let me reply to particular messagez. At any rate... There's a difference between playing both ways, playing both ways consistently, and playing both ways at a high level. High School: After 4 years as a starter, Schrader had 834 rushes for 6,759 yards, and 99 touchdowns. As a receiver, he had 53 receptions with 659 yards and 5 touchdowns. On special teams, he recorded 3 kickoff return touchdowns and 1 punt return touchdown. Total, he had 111 touchdowns including 3 passing touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, he had 481 total tackles, 14 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, and 1 interception. In all, Schrader holds 17 school records including touchdowns, rushing attempts, rushing yards, total yards, and total points in a single game, season, and career for all 5 categories. Defensively, he holds the records for most tackles in a season and a career. He was named an All-Conference Running back and line backer 4 times. He was a 3 time Conference Player of the Year, a 4 time All-District running back and linebacker, and a 3 time All-Metro running back. Schrader was named 2nd team All-State twice, and in his senior year was named 1st team All-State. With a 4.0 GPA in his junior and senior year, he was awarded Honors with Highest Distinction as well. Just like all the other kids who play both ways. Pretty common.
I really trust Dennis Gates and CY. Dennis is like "Monryball". He is data driven and finds the pieces to implement his vision. I think former top 25 recruit Tamar Bates illustrated that he could replace Kobe's production. And I think Connor Vanover will surprise everyone this year by finding a coach who can bring out his best. And I like that the first two of Dennis' 8 core values are friendship and love. Last year and this year, it was evident that they were a team and not a collection of talented individuals. I always wear chic rose-colored glasses but I think at the end of the season, we will again be in the top 4 of the league.
This is weird. I haven't been on SDS for a while. It let me sign in, but I can't reply to messages. Let's see if it lets me post a fresh messsage.
Of the two, which one will have won would be difficult as well!
When he was hired, stories mentioned that he didn't really play football himself and had no football connections per se when he graduated summa cum laude while being the student body president. It indicated to me he was not only whip smart in knowledge, but also smart with interacting with people. I liked Barry, but Eli is achieving things (recruiting, season ticket sales) I have never seen in Missouri, even under Gary Pinkle.
I don't have much more to add. That was my first thought as well. Booches94 hit on the strong character. I would only add that I could see him starting as one of the safeties with a whole spring to train. I hadn't even thought about punt returning! On a different subject, in his short time here, I have really come to trust and admire Drink. I lived through decades of bad Missouri football, was encouraged by Pinkel, had high hopes for Barry, but I have never seen the aura that seems to be there now.
Perhaps you have 2020 recruiting in mind when Drink just got here? I think it was 54 that year which is usually expected when firings/hirings occur that late in the recruiting cycle. The 2021 class (by 247) is the 9th best in the SEC (without Mookie), and it is the highest ranked class for Missouri since they have been tracking. I loved Barry, but Drink seems to be shifting us to a different gear.
I've started watching Ted Lasso and he seems to be the closest to a real live Ted Lasso. Except he cares about winning and losing!
Well, "catch it" just might have a different meaning this year! ;)
I would disagree about the defense. Last year Mizzou had the 15th best defense out of all the schools, a higher ranking than the likes of Auburn, LSU, Michigan...
It resonated with me. "That short of a time?" I remember when the prince's parents got married, which was also about the time Mizzou began decades of futility before Gary Pinkel came along. He moved fan expectations from moral victories to actual victories. And the rumor mill says with the talent in this class, in two years we may be trying for a National Championship. But Mizzou developed a PROGRAM with Gary Pinkel.
In my mind, I really wanted Odom to take over to continue the "do what we do", but I'm not sure he has "paid his dues" as of yet for a Head Coaching job and would also hate to lose him as DC. I think his former boss, Justin Fuente would be able to fit in nicely.
No, that is not Gary Pinkel's way. We probably could have gone bowling in 2012 if Sheldon Richardson had played. He is a very organized coach and everything has a reason. With regard to Dirty Steve's point, he never talks about why a player has been disciplined. Even if it's something that makes the news, he says very little. The James Franklin thing about the shot was not a discipline issue and it was more a slip in wording when asked by a reporter why he wasn't playing.
Mizzou 24, Vandy 6. The offense accounts for the 1 field goal. The three touchdowns are because the Defense doesn't think they've done enough for the team and run in three turnovers.
Props should also go to the Pat Ivey muscle factory to get them into SEC shape.
I saw a tweet yesterday: I'm Mizzou's defense and I have DirecTV. I'm Mizzou's offense and I don't even own a TV.
This is really the only post needed! Good job, cig!
I was going to mention Roger Wehrli for consideration, but I disagree with Coach Pinkel being an average coach. With the author's original list, I think I would have picked him over Devine, because Devine came into a much better situation. Mizzou had reeked for 2 decades and rebuilding a program that had fallen so low is something that Larry, Woody, etc. weren't able to do. It takes an above average coach to rebuild a team like that. We have to play the hand we're dealt and we can't compare what might have happened in other Divisions because we don't know.
I started to say one of the obvious restaurants, like Shakespeare's Pizza, but I really like 44 Stone.
Ah! An opportunity to give my perspective! I went to small colleges. When I was in Ohio, MU beat Ohio State. When I was in Missouri, there were a lot of folks from Nebraska and MU beat the Huskers both years. That's when I started watching football. Then MU sucked for decades. When Gary Pinkel came along, even I was aware of the success he had had at Toledo. Since he has come, we went from being glad for putting up a (losing) fight to expecting to win. People talk about "coaching up", but it's more than that. In the class of 2010, we were probably ranked last in the SEC in rankings for recruiting as we usually are. 10 players from that class are now in the NFL. They have their own system and don't rely on rankings, but the players they recruit have the physical skills necessary. I like to point to Charles Harris this year. MU has had some successful Defensive Ends as you know. Charles Harris will be a starting DE this year. He was a 0 star when he was recruited which I'm sure brought our recruiting ratings down. He had only been playing football for a year and they recruited him from his basketball film. I don't think the ends will have the stats of the last two years, as Odom is going with a different defense than Steck and more of the back 7 will be involved. I think as long as Gary Pinkel is around we will be in contention. I hope when he retires they pick someone from within the system that he has built so that the tradition can continue.
As a whole, I believe Missouri fans and Georgia fans really like each other when they interact. If Missouri doesn't win the East, Georgia would be our second favorite team to take it. This year Maty was just too polite. "No you are the guest. YOU take the ball." I hope the Dawgs return the favor next year!
I agree with the B. Too many dumb mistakes. The final score should have been about 37 - 20. 1st and Goal with 2.5 yds to the end zone with our running game and we settle for a field goal after penalties. Running into the kicker resulting in a touchdown. A B sounds right to me.
Georgia is like the anti-Kansas. It's a great rivalry but without all the animosity. There seems to be a great fellowship among the fans.
Checking if I have a tiger now.
You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Due to the fact that Mizzou was banged up the first year and did not do as well as usual, the old guard of the SEC believes that that is how it should always be with the "elite" of the East (Georgia, SC, and Florida) taking turns battling it out. Mizzou will have to win several East titles and SEC titles to overcome that first bad year impression. Until then, they will always surprisingly be a contender. They were bad for decades and that also hangs on. They are only becoming aware of what a wonderful coach Gary Pinkel is and how he turned the program around. We have decades of history to overcome.
