Well, if Gene gets the job I hope he does well. He's a good man and handled all the BS about Cam as well as could be expected. Thanks for helping Auburn win the SEC and National Championship.
Steve Barnes, excellent analysis. Also, good take on the game, WeagleinTexas
Marshall is a better passer than many deem him. He just needs to learn how to put some arc on the ball. He throws well across the middle, and is okay at launching it way downfield. He just needs to get a handle on those bubble screens.
I find it odd that the most common sense derived conclusion is not addressed. 1. The most successful coaches will eventually get higher salaries than their peers. 2. Successful coaches/teams tend to get the most kids drafted into the NFL because winning programs get the attention of NFL scouts. 3. High school kids want to play for successful coaches who get the most kids into the NFL because that is their ultimate goal. These are the factors that lead to higher paid coaches having better recruiting success.
I'm not sure he is aware of it. His second sentence is: "The solution may be as simple as paying your head coach millions of dollars and putting together an intimidating schedule."
Correlation is not causation. Granted, there can be no control for this type of study, and the variables are many. There are differences in training facilities between Vanderbilt and Alabama. There are different kinds of students being recruited at those same schools. There are a host of problems with a study like this. And as Medic mentioned, there is no distinction about which came first, the success or the raise. In other words, try raising the Vandy HC salary to be equal with Saban's. Does anyone think that would cause an increase in recruiting success or affect anything on the field?
Okay, just for clarification, my post above was aimed at one of those annoying web spammers who promise we'll make big bucks from home if we just click on their virus-laced link.
Let me guess, you're not a college graduate. You may not be an American citizen, either. But you have found a fulfilling job as an internet spammer. This is good, because we all know the average American citizen is not willing to do the unglamorous, but necessary spamming of football forums required to generate sufficient traffic for whatever fictitious website has been established at your link.
Auburn has had 7 different DCs in the last 10 years. This makes recruiting difficult. People blamed Ted Roof for defensive woes and got him fired. He went to Penn St. and did ok. He then went to Ga Tech and did ok with a much more restricted recruiting pool. This indicates that the problem at Auburn has more to do with something other than just coaching or scheme. Johnson was doing the best he could with the resources available. It is hard to run a 4-3 when you only have two decent linebackers and your only good pass rusher is out for the season. But that's the way it is. Just keep firing DCs, rinse, and repeat.
Maybe Nick sneaks onto the Heisman list.
I don't know what the refs expect a guy to do. Once you launch yourself with enough force to knock down your opponent, you can't turn on a dime in mid-air if he ducks down so that his head is now in line with the point of impact.
If Nick Marshall plays as well against Mississippi State, he should work his way into the Heisman conversation.
I sure the people who keep trumpeting the tough schedule as a reason to bet against Auburn having a shot at the National will reward Auburn for winning their games, especially those "tough schedule" games.
Because Auburn WON their game. You Mizzou Tigers still have a lot to learn about being a member of the SEC. When playing out of conference, you HANDLE BUSINESS. Don't lose to bottom-feeding unranked anonymous also-rans. It makes the conference look bad. And for God's sake, get a decent looking mascot. That yellow dancing bear you have masquerading as a tiger looks like a prop costume from a high school Wizard of Oz production. The days of wearing flannel pajamas with a big fuzzy head are over.
Says the ugliest Tiger in the SEC who struggled against South Dakota State, Toledo, and UCF.
One positive takeaway for Auburn is that even if our run game gets stymied, Marshall is able to pass well enough to win the game. Marshall should not take all the blame for incomplete passes. Notice how much better Nick was as a passer as soon as our receivers started catching passes that hit them in the hands? We are three games into a 12 game season. So far so good. I trust the coaches to work on what needs improving.
Dixie, you are exactly right. And have no fear, Gus will trust his running game as he has even when behind late in the game against SEC opponents. Unlike Mark Richt who outsmarted himself, Gus will run it even when the other team knows we are going to run it.
