Anthony Richardson made the wrong kind of headlines Friday. Just hours after Florida’s Orange and Blue spring game Thursday, news broke Friday that the Gator quarterback was cited for speeding in excess of 105 mph on April 4 at 4:11 a.m. on Newberry Road in Alachua County, about 13 miles west of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Saturday morning, On3’s Nick de la Torre shared new comments from Richardson.

“I know I’m not perfect, but it was a mistake,” Richardson told Gators Online in an exclusive interview. “I was speeding. My mom always tells me to drive safe because I can not only hurt myself but I can hurt other people. I shouldn’t have done it and I can definitely say I learned my lesson.”

The third-year quarterback addressed his teammates after the news broke.

“I talked to the team today,” Richardson told Gators Online Friday night. “I let them know I’m gonna handle my business. I’m going to do everything right from this point forward. Doing something like that makes the team and the organization look bad and I don’t want that.”

Richardson, a Gainesville native, acknowledged what comes with being the face of the Florida football team as QB1. The quarterback pointed to head coach Billy Napier’s comments about representing the Gators.

“When I saw the story I wasn’t mad because I was in the wrong. I did feel bad because that makes my name look bad. It makes my family’s name look bad,” Richardson said. “Following what Coach Napier said (Thursday) night, about me being the face of the team and the organization, it makes it seem like he’s lying or contradicting himself. I don’t want anyone to feel like Coach is lying to the team or about myself.”

Florida considers Richardson a redshirt sophomore, giving him a redshirt after playing in 4 games of the 2020 season, which the NCAA does not count against players’ 4 seasons of eligibility. Richardson was named to the 2021 All-SEC Freshman Team after playing in 8 games last year, rushing for 401 yards and 3 touchdowns and throwing for 529 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Richardson, currently listed at 6-4, 237 pounds, went 18-of-24 passing for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding a rushing score in the Blue team’s 34-0 victory Thursday night.
