Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson is not expected to play in the Gators’ Dec. 23 bowl game against UCF. Richardson reportedly underwent surgery recently on his right knee and has not taken part in bowl prep. In his place, Emory Jones will take over the full gameplan.

Richardson shed some light on what exactly is keeping him out of the game, and it sounds pretty serious. Richardson commented on an Instagram post talking about his recovery saying he’s dealing with a meniscus injury that originally occurred in high school.

The tear never healed completely and he has played through it since, but during the first quarter of the Florida State game, he “tore it off the bone.”

In November, former head coach Dan Mullen revealed that Richardson did not play in Florida’s game at South Carolina because the redshirt freshman hurt his knee dancing in the team hotel. In Florida’s regular-season finale against the Seminoles, Richardson limped off the field on the first possession of the game, though he did return in the second half and helped lead the Gators to a 24-21 victory.

Richardson has appeared in 7 games this season, going 38-for-64 passing for 529 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He also has 401 yards rushing with 3 scores.
