Former LSU TE Arik Gilbert, who had committed to Florida, announced on Sunday that he has had a change of heart and will not play for the Gators after all. He announced the decommitment on social media and said he would re-enter the transfer portal.

It’s been an up-and-down few months for Gilbert, who is a former 5-star recruit in the class of 2020, Gilbert entered the NCAA transfer portal two months ago, but about a month ago announced plans to commit to Florida. The standout tight end, and Marietta, Georgia native, was reportedly also considering Georgia as well as withdrawing from the portal and returning to LSU.

Gilbert was widely viewed as one of the best freshmen in the country last season, and appeared in eight games for LSU, and made 35 catches for 368 yards and 2 touchdowns. As long as he was deemed eligible, he was expected to step in for Florida at tight end after the departure of Mackey Award-winner Kyle Pitts, who reportedly helped Gator assistant Tim Brewster recruit Gilbert.

Gilbert was rated the No. 5 overall recruit in the class of 2020 on the 247Sports Composite

Since he announced plans to join Florida after the academic drop/add deadline, he was expected to join the program during the Summer (A or B) semesters.
