Florida’s loss Saturday at home to LSU dropped the Gators to 4-3 on the season.

Billy Napier’s team will be off this Saturday, as it has its bye week.

One area in which Napier would like to see his team improve in practice this week and next is defensively.

The Gators allowed 528 yards of total offense and 45 points in their loss to the Tigers this past weekend.

“Certainly it’s an area on our team we need to improve,” said Napier of the defense on Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference. “… We’re in the middle of that entire process. … At times this year, we’ve played good defense and then at times, we have not played good defense. Overall, the things we can control are the things we’re focused on. … Being on the same page in the first, second and third levels. And then finishing.”

Napier, however, isn’t about to throw his staff, including co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney, under the bust when it comes to Florida’s defensive struggles.

“We’re all disappointed, right? … No one cares more than we do, more than our players do, more than our staff does,” Napier added. “… Patrick, I’ve been around a number of years, and he’s absolutely one of the best coaches I’ve ever been on staff with. … He’s extremely bright, evaluating things objectively, technically and making the necessary adjustments.”

The Gators return to action a week from Saturday with their annual rivalry game in Jacksonville against top-ranked Georgia.
