Brenton Cox has set a major goal for this season, and he’s motivated to reach it.

The Florida pass rusher is well aware of Alex Brown’s program sack record of 13 in 1999, and wants to break it.

“I can’t make all the plays, but the ones that I could have gone harder on I took off,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “I can honestly say I took off a couple plays but I’m here to make it up.”

After he dealt with a foot injury in 2021, Cox is ready for a strong season.

“I’m going for a sack every half. A sack a game or a sack a half,” he said. “Either way I’ve got to get it.”

Cox had 8.5 sacks last season, and 4 in 2020.

Outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson believes in Cox, and said Tuesday that he has “all the skills.”

Cox could do well to have the kind of game he had against Florida State last season when he recorded a program-record 4 sacks against the Seminoles. He also had a forced fumble and quarterback hurry. And he really turned it on down the stretch, as he had 7 sacks in games against Samford, Missouri, FSU and UCF.
