With last month’s College World Series officially wrapping up the 2016-2017 season, CBS Sports has unveiled its “Best in College Sports” final rankings for the 2016-17 season. When it came to the SEC, Florida came out on top and No. 2 overall. Unfortunately for the Gators, No. 1 overall ranking went to rival Florida State. Florida, however, has reason to feel shafted by CBS.

The CBS Sports rankings were based on a weighted formula which rated a team’s football finish out of a possible 250 points, men’s basketball out of 200 points and women’s basketball out of 100 points. CBS then selected two “wild cards” out of a school’s best finishes in baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling to be scored out of 100 points. By CBS’ weighted scores, Florida was given was given 153.75 points for its 9-4 season and Outback Bowl win in football, 146 points for making the Elite Eight in basketball, zero points in women’s basketball, 100 points for winning the College World Series in baseball and 90 points for making it to the Women’s College World Series final.

Despite a strong year for Florida athletics, the CBS score of 489.75 fell short of FSU’s 491.75. CBS’ choice of wild card sports, however, undoubtedly hurt Florida. Baseball wasn’t UF’s only national title this spring, as the Gators also won the men’s outdoor track and field national championship and the women’s tennis national championship. CBS, however, did not include track or tennis in its wild card sports. If Florida had been able to include one of its other national championships as a second wild card, that would have put the Gators above the Seminoles.

The only other SEC program to join Florida in the top 10 was South Carolina, which came in at No. 6 overall with 451.5 points off of the women’s basketball national championship and men’s basketball trip to the Final Four. Alabama, the SEC football champion, came in at No. 15 at 392.5 points.

The full rankings can be viewed here, unfortunately, without an explanation of which sports were picked for each team’s wild card scores.
