Could a tight end be in the Heisman Trophy conversation?

Joel Klatt of FOX Sports thinks Florida’s Kyle Pitts just might. It’s a position that is rarely, if ever, included in the discussion, but Pitts’ numbers through the first 2 games are hard to ignore.

“I think Kyle Pitts might be one of if not the best player in America that’s not a quarterback” said Klatt.

Pitts has 12 catches through the first 2 games, with 227 yards and 6 touchdowns.

“He is an absolute monster” said Klatt. “And Florida looks to be, at least in my estimation, really the class of the SEC East.

“Kyle Pitts right now looks like the absolute real deal. Could we have a tight end in the Heisman discussion? I think we might, with how good this guy is. It doesn’t matter if he’s double-covered, it doesn’t matter if he’s single-covered, they’ll find a matchup, and they’ll get the ball to him.

“Kudos to Dan Mullen, Kyle Trask, their quarterback, and the Florida Gators for another win, and another big day. Trask had another big day throwing the football in large part, because all the focus having being payed attention to Kyle Pitts, their tight end.”

Pitts caught 4 balls on Saturday, for 57 yards and 2 touchdowns in Florida’s 38-24 win over South Carolina on Saturday. This followed Pitts’ monster 4-touchdown performance in Florida’s rout of Ole Miss in the SEC’s opening weekend.

It remains to be seen if Pitts can carry over these performances when the Gators face better defenses, starting with Texas A&M and LSU, respectively, over the next 2 weeks.
