Dan Mullen is known for being an efficient offensive coach. When Florida teams have been successful in the past, including when Mullen was the offensive coordinator, it typically is due to a strong offense.

So Mullen knows what those who follow the Gators are expecting to see in his first season as their coach.

“The Gator fan base has the equivalency of if you score points, you win championships, and that’s the only way it works,” Mullen said on “The Paul Finebaum Show” at SEC Media Days on Tuesday. “So there’s pressure on me to score points.”

Over the past three seasons, Florida fans have been disappointed with the team’s offense under former coach Jim McElwain. It should be a welcome change for them to watch a team led by Mullen, who was the Gators’ offensive coordinator from 2005-08.

During his previous stint at Florida, Mullen’s offense was led by top playmakers, and it led to success. How will Mullen replicate that now that he’s back with the Gators?

“One of the big things to scoring points offensively is you look and say, ‘OK, what do guys do well?’ Make sure we put them in a position to do things they do well,” Mullen said. “And get some talented guys. It helps when you have like a Percy Harvin. You also have to make sure you put the ball in Percy Harvin’s hands and put him in the open field, and then let him go do what he does.

“That’s the key for us right now, is taking a look at our roster, finding what our guys do well and making sure that we’re putting them in a position to go do that.”
