Florida had another scrimmage on Monday, and coach Dan Mullen told reporters that it was sloppy, but that the Gators overall are headed in the right direction.

“I did see some good football. I’m excited how we’re improving,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “I do think it was better football played, so I feel like we’re heading in the right direction.”

In a series of adjustments this year, Florida is transitioning to working within the 20-hour a week mandate as opposed to unlimited hours.

“You went from having a training camp to have an in-season schedule,” he said. “It basically eliminated training camp altogether. … It’s going to be a big mental grind for our players over the next two weeks.”

Overall, the Gators were more consistent in the second scrimmage, Mullen said, but consistency is not where it needs to be to go on road to play an SEC game. Florida is getting set to play at Ole Miss on Sept. 26.

Mullen added that Kadarius Toney is progressing as a receiver rather than just a get-it-to guy.

Mullen also said that the Gators will try to catch up on some lifting and conditioning over the next two weeks that were limited due to COVID-related restrictions.
