Redshirt sophomore Feleipe Franks is Florida’s starting quarterback, but the biggest question at the position is whether the Gators will use freshman Emory Jones.

The former 4-star recruit impressed in UF’s 63-10 win against Idaho, going 12-of-16 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns as well as rushing the ball seven times for 19 yards. Jones was able to enter the game in the second quarter and play the most he has all season. First-year coach Dan Mullen has long stated he plans to redshirt Jones. The freshman has now played in three games, meaning he can play against either arch-rival Florida State or in the bowl game – but not both – and not have the 2018 season count as one of his four seasons of eligibility.

During his Monday press conference with the local media, Mullen was asked when he’ll make the decision on whether to play Jones.

“Some time during the game,” Mullen said.. “We’ve gotta prepare for him to play because he’s a snap away from being our starter.”

Jones is now the backup to Franks after redshirt sophomore Kyle Trask injured his foot in practice earlier this month. Mullen made it clear Jones will continue to practice and prepare as the backup.
