Many Florida fans were surprised to see true freshman Emory Jones play in the Georgia game Saturday. He ran the ball four times for 12 yards and threw a pass that didn’t make the box score because it resulted in a pass interference penalty.

On Monday, Gators coach Dan Mullen indicated Jones will play in “at least two more games this year.”

With the Georgia game being Jones’ second appearance of the season, two more games would allow the former 4-star recruit to redshirt this season and not have 2018 count as one of his four seasons of eligibility. Redshirting Jones seems to be Mullen’s intention barring an unexpected change to the quarterback depth chart such as an injury or a suspension.

“I think the new (redshirt) rule helps in a lot of ways, in a guy like Emory can get experience,” Mullen said in his press conference. “I don’t think that was the overall intent of that rule, (but) I think it’s a benefit.”

As far as Jones’ development, the head coach says there have been “flashes.”

“I think we’ve seen in in flashes with him in how he grows,” Mullen said. “I think he’s grown with learning how to prepare within a game.”

Though Jones was worked into the game, Florida fans should not expect any changes to the quarterback depth chart. Franks is still the starter and fellow redshirt sophomore Kyle Trask continues to take the majority of the backup reps.

Mullen said he saw Franks’ 13-of-21 performance for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception as a mixed bag. He singled out Franks’ fumble as a “bad play” and the 36-yard touchdown pass to WR Freddie Swain as a “big-time throw.”

“I thought he did some really good things,” Mullen said of Franks. “There are some throws he missed … I don’t think he play bad. I don’t think he lit it up. I don’t know if he took a huge step backwards. I think he just missed some throws.”
