Notable coaches, players from Florida react to state legislature's decision to delay name, image and likeness
Florida was once viewed as a nationwide leader in the push for name, image and likeness laws but that quickly changed overnight.
If you missed the news, Florida Legislature’s updated the state’s upcoming name, image and likeness legislation that would have legalized college athletes’ ability to profit off their image in commercials and sponsorships. The name, image and likeness bill was set to become a law on July 1, 2021, but the state legislature voted to push that back to July 1, 2022.
If Gov. Ron DeSantis signs the the legislation, name, image and likeness won’t come to Florida until July 1, 2022.
DeSantis has previously issued his public support for name, image and likeness to come to Florida as soon as possible.
Following this update from the Florida Legislature several notable coaches and players from the state have reacted asking the state government to ensure name, image and likeness becomes law in the state in 2021.
Florida State coach Mike Norvell
There is no reason to wait to do the right thing
The state of Florida was a leader on NIL and, as other states quickly tried to follow our model, college athletes in Florida have been able to position themselves to be ready to benefit starting July 1, 2021#KeepTheDate

This is unacceptable. @GovRonDeSantis must use his veto power to fix this. While the rest of the states are moving forward to follow OUR lead, we inexcusably take a giant step backwards…. https://t.co/NRATzBCjOk

Under the leadership of Florida Governor @GovRonDeSantis our state has been a leader in NIL legislation on behalf of student-athletes at schools across our state. Now, more than ever, our student-athletes need his leadership and encourage him to veto SB 1028. pic.twitter.com/ZXrmKCkjp4
