Florida’s 2022 recruiting class took a major hit with the decommitment on Friday from 5-star 2022 athlete Sam McCall of Lakeland, Florida (Lake Gibson).

McCall is the No. 4 athlete in America, and No. 5 player in the state of Florida in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He has a reported 14 offers, and committed to Florida in October. He’s listed at 6-feet and 180 pounds.

The decommitment leaves Florida with one player committed in the 2022 class, Syveion Ellis, a wide receiver out of Miami.

Although McCall is listed as an athlete, it appears defensive back could be his position in college. Alabama, Florida State and Oklahoma were believed to be the finalists when he committed to the Gators. When McCall announced his commitment in a video, including a FaceTime call with coach Dan Mullen and congratulations from former Florida safety Ahmad Black, Mullen references getting McCall involved on both sides of the ball.

He’s a glimpse of his 247Sports scouting report: Just over 6-foot and growing. Adequate length in the arms with some defined muscle. A versatile athlete that has found ways to impact the game on offense, defense and special teams throughout his prep career. Instincts and range suggest, however, that his future is likely at defensive back
