Will Muschamp no longer coaches at the University of Florida, so perhaps the Gators will start to have better luck with quarterbacks.

But Will Grier, the team’s starter early this season, reportedly will transfer after a one-year suspension for performance-enhancing drugs that extends through the first six games of 2016.

There is no guarantee that Grier would have his starting job back if he remained in Gainesville, but Treon Harris hasn’t shown anything to make folks believe he’s better than Grier and Feleipe Franks will be a true freshman.

Grier would become the sixth scholarship quarterback to transfer away from Florida in the last three years. Most of those quarterbacks have played well elsewhere.

  • Jacoby Brissett, N.C. State: The dual-threat quarterback has thrown for 42 touchdowns against 9 interceptions as the Wolfpack starter the last two seasons. He’s also rushed for 832 yards and 8 touchdowns.
  • Tyler Murphy, Boston College: A versatile athlete, Murphy ran for 1,179 yards for the Eagles in 2014. He’s been mostly a practice squad member of the Pittsburgh Steelers this year as a quarterback/receiver, but he has caught one NFL pass.
  • Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech: The Will Muschamp-Driskel partnership never did work in Gainesville. But Driskel has found new life as a football player this season, adding to the “Muschamp as QB killer” narrative. Driskel threw for more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Bulldogs in 2015, including a huge performance in the team’s 47-28 New Orleans Bowl win on Saturday.
  • Max Staver, Tyler Junior College/Houston Baptist: The 6-foot-5 quarterback started 9 games this season, but completed just 42.8 percent of his passes and threw almost twice as many interceptions as touchdowns.
  • Skyler Mornhinweg, Columbia: An afterthought in Gainesville, Mornhinweg has found the field in New York. He threw for 1,321 yards and rushed for another 266, accounting for 9 total touchdowns in 2015.
  • Will Grier, Destination Unknown: Suspended for one year due to performance enhancing drugs, Grier reportedly has decided to depart from Gainesville, perhaps for a junior college where he’d be able to play immediately.
