When Dan Mullen returned to Florida, he brought back a jersey number tradition from his time as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator: No. 1 is to be worn by special players.

“You’ve got to be a baller to be No. 1,” Mullen said at a booster club event ahead of the 2018 season. “I don’t know if I have anybody at No. 1 just yet. I don’t know if anybody’s done enough in general.”

With Kadarius Toney now playing for the New York Giants, there’s a new No. 1 on the Gator offense. It was revealed Wednesday that redshirt junior wide receiver Jacob Copeland is the new No. 1 on offense. Returning defender Brenton Cox also wears No. 1.

Copeland was the No. 69 overall recruit in the class of 2018. He signed with Florida over Alabama and Tennessee. Now in his fourth year with the Gators, Copeland is expected to lead the Florida receiving corps after years of playing alongside of Toney, Van Jefferson, Freddie Swain, Tyrie Cleveland and others. Last season, Copeland was fourth on the team in receiving (23 catches, 435 yards, 3 touchdowns).

With Copeland moving to No. 1, second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson is taking No. 15. According to Thomas Goldkamp of 247Sports, tight end Kemore Gamble will now sport No. 2 (Richardson’s old number) while two other players are also making the move to single digits: wide receiver Justin Shorter (No. 4) and defensive lineman Zach Carter (No. 6).
