The Gators got a much-needed win last weekend over UAB in dominating 36-7 fashion. The victory gives Florida some momentum heading into the final game of the season against a fading Florida State program that needs a win in order to qualify for a bowl. While the season has been a huge disappointment for the Gators, ending FSU’s bowl streak would be a fantastic way to cap the season.

Interim coach Randy Shannon spoke during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. Here’s a summary of what he had to say:

  • Opening comments: Practice is getting physical, it’s going to be a physical game. We’ve been kicking too many field goals in the red zone. We need to score points in the red zone, FSU converts in the red zone. Our defense down there will be vital.
  • On the last few weeks as head coach: It’s been great. You go around and try to get the team back in order. Get the guys to realize they are here to win games. They have responded well.
  • On coaching transition: In coaching, you have to accept that you will be changing jobs. You can’t control that. The job I have now is the best job I have and that’s always been my mindset.
  • With both Florida and FSU having losing records, does that take anything away from the game? No, it doesn’t take anything away from it. The players in this game know each other. The coaches on the staffs know each other. It’s a great rivalry. We will be the first game up on Thanksgiving, we will enjoy it.
