Jim McElwain throws some shade at Tennessee
Florida coach Jim McElwain made it clear on Thursday afternoon that he’s tired of talking a particular SEC East rival.
When asked about adding former Volunteers punter Tommy Townsend to the roster, McElwain couldn’t resist throwing some shade on those hyping the Knoxville program:
McElwain on adding Townsend: #Vols have a heck of a punter "and I don't know, I guess they've got all of the best players in this league."
— Thomas Goldkamp (@ThomasGoldkamp) August 4, 2016
To be fair, RB Jalen Hurd and QB Joshua Dobbs are pretty solid football players, but McElwain made it clear that he thinks the Gators are getting snubbed when it comes to media coverage.
This is just more fuel added to the fire in the Tennessee-Florida rivalry. It’ll be fun to see what happens when the two teams actually square off on the field on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Neyland Stadium.
Ehh, just the media being the media. Both great programs. It’s just that one team is the favorite to win the east and the other isn’t.
Being favored and actually winning something are two different things as Tennessee’s found out for many many many many many years.
I’m just relieved that TN players and coaches have largely stayed out of the flame war.
Somebody hasn’t been following Kongbo’s twitter then lol
Hence the qualifier “largely.”
It’s not quite “you can’t spell citrus without UT” or “free shoes university” but he may get there one day.
Well, he can get some consulting on that now. ;)
Only one thing to say here. You make millions a year and can’t fix your teeth? Another great coach. Just kind of blows my mind.
Maybe if Ole Miss spent some money fixing their education instead of paying off players, you might have something to comment on.
The Gators are the East champs until someone steps up and takes it. Until then it’s just hype and talk. Until then the Gators are the best team in the east.
Not speaking to which team might win the East, but you’re mistaken. This isn’t UFC or boxing — there are no “defending champions”, which you’re insinuating. Florida isn’t guaranteed a spot versus the best performing team from 2016.
Obvious? Yes. However, it’s irksome to hear this phrase used in football. I put this in the waste bin alongside with “controlling one’s destiny”.
Sorry, this IS like every other sport that has a defending champion. The problem is the Gators should have forfeited most of their wins last year so JM is the last coach who should be complaining about the UT cheerleading party, we call the media. It’s fundamentally unethical journalism, and it’s way past time for the NCAA to start taking some live coverage rights away for those who represent outlets that pick winners and promote them with free favorable stories. Real money is at stake here. A real principle of fair competition is being violated. If you are a member of a team that is being slighted, your best reaction would be to bring your A+ game to Tennessee and shut their cheerleaders up.
Of course it’s not made official that it’s a defending champ with a belt or anything. You’re not literally defending a weight class. I’m sure Bill didn’t mean it literally like that either. But as a fan or player, you know the team is against a previous champ.
Spot on @gators4life, thank you for using common sense. Can’t wait for the season to start so all this hype can be done with.
It’s wonderful to see Tennessee fans all hyped up ! They get this way every year about this time but Unfortunately for them they haven’t won anything for many many many many many many many many many years
I am not a fan of trash talking, throwing shade or that kind of stuff. I understand the players, but a coach? The ONLY coach who could get away with that was Spurrier. He tossed his digs, but they were funny too. After the way UF tanked last year, I would be worrying about my team, not someone else’s. They have beaten UT 11 times straight – why the obsession?
Spurrier is officially a Florida gator once again so expect the magic to return.
Same reason UT fans are obsessed every year they are proclaimed the favorite to win the east, yet find ways to lose it.
It’s college football… the obsessions and chatter is what makes it so fun!
I am just glad to see the East finally rising up again and hopefully we will be back to the 90’s UF-UGA-UT round robin of huge games affecting the national picture again.
This article succeeded. You can just have a regular conversation and certain simple comments can be taken way out of proportion and be made articles out of to get people fired up.
It might as well be titled “McElwain talks MAD SH*T about UT.” The media is the ones turning it into fire and everyone’s eating it all up.
Boring
Finally tackman, you said something I agree with haha.
Then why did you spend time Reading and replying .You must have a boring life
Just because you talk to someone that is boring doesn’t mean you’re entertained by them.
Mike were on the same team wtf lol
Y’all are doing all the talking hot shot. Tennessee coaches and players are getting ready for Appalachian State.
That’s smart because Appalachian State could sneak up and beat you
After getting blown out in their last 3 games, mcelwain’s already catching heat from florida fans—he better start winning big soon. Their fans have little patience.
Lol, McElwain is not catching heat from anyone. Once we had Harris last year, the decision was made NOT to change the offense for a QB who was not the future of the team. He kept the offense the same so the rest of the team got comfortable with the new system and play calling. Very smart choice.
And losing to FSU and Bama is hardly a bad thing… The defense gave up due to no support from the offense and many were thinking NFL, it is not like they were beaten down.
So, how did it work out for you Swamp Donkey? Not sure which mental image I’m gonna enjoy looking back on the most, the one of the Florida players looking like they just got manhandled or the look of helplessness on your face everytime we hammered it home on you? The Gators should feel lucky, if we hadn’t shot ourselves in the foot we probably would have hung 59 on you. GBO!
I am sure you would prefer the manhandled image. It would be more consistent with the rest of your internet searches. :) Those are big words coming from a team that has lost the last 11 years in a row. As far as luck, your lucky to be 5-0. It should be more like 3-2. Good luck on the rest of your season!
