The Sunshine State has experienced an incredible turnover rate among FBS head coaches in recent seasons. So much so, that longtime Georgia coach Mark Richt is the longest-tenured member of the group heading into the 2018 season with a whopping three years of experience at Miami.

Florida, Florida State, UCF, FIU, FAU, and USF have all seen coaching changes since Richt’s arrival. Now all those programs are currently looking up at the Hurricanes but that could be changing quickly depending on how successful the new coaches in Gainesville and Tallahassee turn out to be.

During a recent appearance on Birmingham-based WJOX 94.5 FM radio program The Roundtable, former college and NFL quarterback, and current analyst for ESPN’s CFB coverage, Brock Huard was asked which coach would be the most successful over the next five years — Willie Taggart or Dan Mullen?

Here is his take on that question:

“That’s a great question. I’m going to say Willie Taggart — and that’s probably a little more of a lean on the ACC versus what Dan has got in the SEC,” Huard answered on the show. “(Mullen) wanted to go back there, he knows the conference very well, obviously, he gets out of the SEC West and now it’s the East there where Kirby (Smart) and some others (are there).

“I would think much like Jimbo (Fisher) had a pretty good run at Florida State and Bobby (Bowden) before him, Willie has some opportunities recruiting that state, the tradition, the history, the opportunity there to have more sustained success or maybe a quicker ramp up to success in Tallahassee than Dan does with the challenges in that conference.”

Based on that answer, Huard’s answer has more to do with what each coach currently faces on an annual basis more so than their individual coaching and recruiting ability. In Mullen’s eight years at Mississippi State, he compiled a 69-46 record, with a 32-39 SEC record. Willie Taggart currently has a losing record as a head coach, going 47-50 combined at stops at Oregon, South Florida, and Western Kentucky.

The two coaches will meet as Sunshine State rivals for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Tallahassee.
