Things got ugly Friday in Nashville when battling for position on the floor turned into serious injuries for Tennessee’s John Fulkerson and the ejection of Florida’s Omar Payne.

Payne and Fulkerson were tangled up when the Gator player first elbowed the Vol in the chin. With his back turned, Payne then threw a second elbow that hit Fulkerson in the head, sending him to the floor. Payne was tossed with a Flagrant 2 and Fulkerson is now out for the remainder of the SEC Tournament as Tennessee faces Alabama in the semifinals. On Saturday, Tennessee revealed Fulkerson is dealing with a concussion and a facial fracture.

Saturday, Payne tweeted that he apologized to Fulkerson and also wanted to do so publicly, saying sorry to the Tennessee program and coach Rick Barnes. He thanked the Vols for their support of Florida standout Keyontae Johnson.

“I’m sorry for what transpired yesterday and deeply regret the incident,” Payne wrote in a note. “I have nothing but respect for John and [the] Tennessee program. Especially, their support for my brother Keyontae this season. I’ve apologized to John and wanted to also say I’m sorry publicly to him, the Tennessee team and Coach Barnes. I wish them the best on their NCAA tournament run.”

Shortly after Payne posted his Apple Notes screenshot, Fulkerson tweeted a statement of his own acknowledging that Payne reached out to him.

“I know a lot of people are upset with what happened during yesterday’s game. Omar reached out to me this morning and was very remorseful. Everyone makes mistakes. Let’s all show grace and focus on today’s game. Go Vols!
