If you missed the news over the weekend, former Florida head coach Jim McElwain has landed on his feet as an assistant in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The pairing of McElwain and Jim Harbaugh could be seen as an odd coupling considering two coaches don’t have many ties outside of facing off against one another twice in recent years, both games were won convincingly by Michigan. Taking into account both have struggled mightily on offense in recent seasons, it seems odd that Harbaugh would hire a coach that has experienced the same issues, but here we are.

During his weekly Monday morning appearance on WJOX 94.5 FM program The Opening Drive, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum was asked to share his thoughts on McElwain joining the Michigan program.

“Well, I don’t think there is a good fit with Jim Harbaugh,” Finebaum said, “but I think McElwain needed to get a job because he was completely forgotten about. He left in the middle of the season in November. And I think Jim McElwain is a good football coach. I think he was a terrible fit for Florida and I think he’ll help Michigan. I don’t think it would take much to restart the Michigan offense.”

Finebaum makes a good point. After all, McElwain did win his division in each of his first two seasons on the job. No other coach in the history of the SEC has accomplished that goal. While that’s an accomplishment any coach would love to claim, incredibly, McElwain was fired into his third season after ceding control of the division to Georgia.

Based on his ugly mid-season exit from Gainesville, it’s unlikely McElwain ever makes an appearance as a head coach in the SEC again. Still, given his success early in his Florida tenure, and as head coach of Colorado State, there’s a good chance he’s a head coach again if he can help Michigan’s offense in the near future.
