Much-maligned quarterback Feleipe Franks threw three touchdown passes on Saturday in Tallahassee as Florida snapped a five-game losing streak to rival Florida State, routing the Seminoles 41-14.

The Gators finished the regular season 9-3, while dooming their rivals to a 5-7 finish and their first losing season since 1976. Florida ended the Seminoles’ streak of 36 consecutive seasons in a bowl game.

Franks threw all three of his scores in the second half as the Gators, ranked 11th in the CFP, could be headed to the Citrus Bowl or even a New Year’s 6 bowl game in coach Dan Mullen’s first year.

Leading 13-7 at halftime, the Gators moved the ball on the opening drive of the second half inside the FSU 10. The Seminoles seemed to come up with a stop on third and 7 after Jordan Scarlett gained 3 yards on a running play, but defensive back Stanford Samuels III was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving UF a first down. On the next play Franks connected with Josh Hammond on an easy pass for a 3-yard touchdown and a 20-7 Gators lead.

CeCe Jefferson recovered a fumble that Jachai Polite forced on a sack of FSU quarterback Deondre Francois. Franks needed just one play to hit Trevon Grimes with a 22-yard touchdown pass to extend UF’s lead to 27-7.

Francois scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run to pull the Seminoles within 13 points but Franks continued attacking FSU. Franks hit Van Jefferson on a 38-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter and make the score 34-14.

The Gators nearly doubled the Seminoles yardage behind a stellar performance from their offensive line. Lamical Perine had the longest play from scrimmage for Florida this season — a 74-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Florida a 10-0 lead.

Mullen improved to 5-0 in his career against the Seminoles; the first four victories came when he was the offensive coordinator on Urban Meyer’s UF staff.
