Typically, there isn’t much to get excited about when SEC teams face cupcake opponents in November. But Florida fans might have something to get excited about if Gator great and SEC Network analyst Chris Doering is right with his prediction for UF’s Week 12 game.

Florida will host Idaho, a 4-6 team out of the Big Sky conference on Saturday. The Gators are finished with conference play but won’t play arch-rival Florida State until Nov. 24. Doering predicts that Dan Mullen will use the Idaho game to give true freshman Emory Jones significant playing time at quarterback.

“Week 12 is awful in the @SEC every year but there are a couple things that I’m anxious to see including how much Justin Fields and Emory Jones get to play. I’d bet that Jones gets at least a half this week vs Idaho,” Doering wrote in a tweet Sunday.

A product of Heard County High School in Franklin, Ga., Jones was rated the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback, No. 11 Georgia product and No. 85 recruit overall nationally in the 2018 recruiting class on the 247Sports Composite. The fact that Mullen’s offense is designed for quarterbacks who can both run and throw (dual threat) has many Gators fans wanting to see more of Jones as starting QB Feleipe Franks continues to display some of the same shortcomings week in, week out.

Mullen has made it clear that his plan is to redshirt Jones. The true freshman has appeared in two games so far this season. The new redshirt rules allow him to appear in two more. With seven wins on the season, Florida will be going bowling. It will be interesting to see which two of the remaining three games Mullen chooses to use Jones. Doering clearly thinks Saturday will be one of them.
