Three-star TE Zech Byrd pledged to Florida in August, but when Feb. 1 finally arrived, Byrd did not sign with the Gators.

With the basketball season coming to a close for Stanhope Elmore (Millbrook, Ala.), reporters tried to get an update from Byrd on his college football plans.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Byrd said. It was the same answer he gave on National Signing Day about his situation with UF.

The Gators signed 23 players in their recruiting class, which brings the scholarship number up to 84 after graduation, entrants into the NFL Draft and transfers. Assuming Byrd is academically good to go, that means there is technically a spot open.

Since Florida coaches cannot talk about an unsigned player, and Byrd isn’t speaking on the situation, it’s unclear what changed since the August commitment. When Byrd was asked about possibly enrolling in junior college, he repeated his answer of “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Whether or not Byrd signs with UF will have little impact on the Gators this fall. Florida has four returning tight ends, including DeAndre Goolsby and C’yontai Lewis, and added Kemore Gamble, an early enrollee, in the 2017 class. Goolsby is entering his senior season, and Lewis is one of three juniors at the position, so Byrd could have potentially provided depth for 2019, but UF coaches have time to address that.

247Sports has dropped Byrd from Florida’s list of commitments for 2017, which has made the Gators’ adjusted class of 23 signees drop one spot to No. 11 nationally in the composite rankings.
