Video: Former Gators recount Steve Spurrier's hilarious warning about autograph seekers
As the 1996 Gators made their run for the school’s first national championship, some of the team’s standout players were developing a little bit of star power.
Danny Wuerffel, who would win the Heisman Trophy, was a favorite of autograph seekers who waited outside Florida games and practices.
Wuerffel recently caught up with his former teammate, James Bates, for Bates’ You Tube series “Head Ball Coach Stories.”
The two discussed Spurrier’s over-the-top warning about why his players shouldn’t sign autographs, with a hilarious Head Ball Coach impression from Bates:
Less than 1 year removed from his quitting we now know this:
1. He isn’t trustworthy.
2. He will stab his team in the back.
3. He will eventually run from failure.
4. He will drag your program down with him.
5. He is a cheater.
Congratulations to Steve Spurrier and his new reputation.
It could not have happened to more deserving schools and man.
What else we know:
1) He was 8-4 against Fat Phil while coaching the Gators
2) Peyton never beat the Gators
3) You can’t spell Citrus without UT
4) Gators have won 11 in a row currently against Tennessee
1. Florida hasn’t reached 30 points in 10 games and counting.
2. Those 1 point escapes are going to end at some point against Tennessee.
3. Jorts still aren’t cool.
4. Tennessee still has over 100 more wins all-time than Florida and a better winning %.
5. Tennessee has more national titles than Florida.
6. Florida has yet to go undefeated in their history as a team.
You may talk if/when UT wins the game this year. Otherwise, stay silent, you’re not making yourself look any better.
1. 45 points. Reached.
2. Checkerboard pants aren’t cool
3. See you Sept 24 for your 12th beatdown in a row.
Steve Spurrier is washed up.
……That’s why he retired. He was a great coach, and you’re just upset because you’re team is terrible. You make yourself and your team look bad when you make bitter comments like that.
I’ll go ahead and correct my grammar *your
Lol “those 1 point escapes are going to end at some point against Tennessee.” “I know they’re going to end soon! I just know it.”
Vols fans for the past 11 years.
Lol, @BTGator well played.
