Walter Clayton Jr. has decided on his new program, and the former Iona guard, has decided against following his former coach, and committed to Todd Golden and Florida over his former coach Rick Pitino, now at St. John’s.
Clayton revealed his decision on The Field of 68 media network, and said, “I’ll be taking my talents to Gainesville.”
Clayton’s only official visits were to St. John’s and Florida, and the Gators won out in part because the MAAC Player of the Year is a Lake Wales, Florida native, who grew up just a few hours from the Gators’ campus in Gainesville.
Clayton has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Clayton had a banner sophomore season and averaged 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists, while he helped Iona reach the NCAA Tournament. He led the nation in free-throw shooting at 95.3% and shot 43.1% from 3-point range. He made 45.5% of his field goal attempts.
Clayton’s move continues a strong week for the Gators after they also landed a commitment from
Micah Handlogten, a 7-foot-1 center who played at Marshall last season.
