It’s customary in today’s football climate to shy away from live hitting during practice. That’s especially true for quarterbacks, who have been wearing the yellow “no-contract” jerseys during training camps for decades.

That’s apparently not the case for the Florida Gators in Dan Mullen’s first fall camp as head coach. On Thursday afternoon, QB Kyle Trask ran over a teammate in a live contact drill.

Trask has yet to play a down for Florida. He came to the Gators as a 3-star recruit in the 2016 class. Two days before the 2017 season opener against Michigan, Trask injured his foot in practice and needed surgery, which kept him out the rest of the season. But he has played well this offseason and appears to be ready to have an impact.

Winning respect from teammates with hits such as that in practice only help. Mullen is likely trying to change the culture in Gainesville, where the Gators haven’t been a real contender in a few years. Florida won the SEC East in 2015 and 2016 under previous head coach Jim McElwain, but the division was down during those seasons, and the Gators were no match for Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

Mullen spent nine seasons at Mississippi State and turned around that program. He recorded a 69-46 record, posted seven winning seasons and took the Bulldogs to a bowl game in each of his last eight years.
