Heading into the early signing period, it’s Georgia, not Alabama, that has the SEC’s No. 1-rated recruiting class.

With the nation’s No. 2 overall player (QB Justin Fields), No. 1 running back (Zamir White) and No. 1 OLB (Adam Anderson) in the mix, this has the chance to be one of the best recruiting classes in Georgia history.

If the Bulldogs can beat Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl and advance to the national title game, it will likely help their 2018 class even more. But, for now, even the team’s early commits are outstanding.

Though they only have the nation’s No. 4 overall class at the moment (behind Ohio State, Texas and Miami), there’s still time for this group to jump to the top spot.

Here are 10 things you should know about Georgia’s 2018 recruiting class heading into the early signing period:

1. There are some injury concerns

Fields (right hand injury) and White (torn ACL) both had their high school careers end prematurely.

Fields should be ready to go for spring ball, but White may have to redshirt in 2018 as he waits for his ACL to fully heal.

2. The Dawgs are still in the mix for another elite player

For the longest time, 5-star OT Cade Mays was committed to Tennessee, but he backed off that pledge amid all the drama surrounding the Butch Jones firing.

Now, he’s down to Georgia, Clemson and Ohio State as his final three options, so it’ll be interesting to see which school Mays eventually chooses.

Right now, Clemson is the favorite to land his services, but with so much talent already in the 2018 class at Georgia, Mays may find it too difficult to pass up the chance to play with the top dual-threat quarterback and top running back.

3. They have another RB with a strong pedigree

In addition to having the No. 1 running back in Zamir White, the Bulldogs also have the No. 3 back in James Cook.

Cook is the younger brother of former Florida State star and current Minnesota Viking Dalvin Cook.

It won’t be easy for the younger Cook to live up to his brother’s example, but he’ll be able to find a role he can thrive in alongside White, D’Andre Swift and others.

4. They’re keeping the best players home

The Bulldogs have 10 players from Georgia committed already, and an impressive eight of them are 4- and 5-star prospects.

Of the top-10 players from Georgia, the Bulldogs have commitments from three and aren’t done recruiting their home turf just yet.

5. They’re in the mix for some more elite Georgia talent

The Bulldogs are still very much in play to land No. 1 OG Jamaree Salyer and No. 2 strong-side DE Brenton Cox.

Both of them are 5-star players and would be huge additions to Kirby Smart’s already incredible 2018 class.

6. They have sway outside of Georgia, too

In addition to landing some of the top talent from the Peach State, the Bulldogs are branching out a bit as well.

Alabama is a perennial powerhouse because it can recruit top players from any state (ditto Ohio State). To hang with the big boys, Smart’s staff will have to recruit nationally as well.

They’re off to a good start in 2018, with commits from Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Kansas in addition to Georgia.

7. They’re getting Jake Fromm some new targets

The Bulldogs will have to replace leading receiver Javon Wims this offseason, but at least Terry Godwin will be back.

However, receiver is an area of need for the Dawgs and, at the moment, they have commitments from a pair of 4-star receivers — Kearis Jackson and Elijah Moore.

8. They’re trending younger

While SEC East rival Tennessee is targeting several JUCO players who can come to Knoxville and provide an immediate boost, the Bulldogs are mostly loading up on high school talent.

In fact, of the Dawgs’ 18 current commits, only one — 4-star DT Devonte Wyatt — is coming from the JUCO ranks.

9. It’s a very balanced class

Right now, the Bulldogs have 18 players in their 2018 class — nine offensive players, eight defenders and a kicker.

Whether or not they keep that balance following the early signing period remains to be seen, but for now, both sides of the ball will be getting some talented reinforcements.

10. They still have some work to do

At the moment, the Bulldogs have the SEC’s No. 1 recruiting class, but Alabama is lurking quietly, waiting to make its move.

The Crimson Tide have put together the nation’s (and SEC’s) No. 1 recruiting classes every year since 2011 (seven straight years).

So, while the Tide are currently in the No. 9 position (No. 3 in the SEC), that is likely to change in a major way before the recruiting cycle is complete. Therefore, the Bulldogs will need some more big-time players if they want to unseat Alabama and end the Tide’s streak of top classes.
