Maurice Smith made a lot of headlines this offseason when he announced his decision to leave Alabama’s football program for Georgia, which turned into a public battle between him and coach Nick Saban (along with his former teammates).

Six weeks into the 2016 season, Alabama (6-0, 3-0) ranks No. 1 in the nation and Georgia (4-2, 2-2) has some work to do before climbing back into the AP poll after losses to Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Did he make a mistake by heading to Athens?

“Oh not at all,” Smith said, per DawgNation.com. “The bonds that I’ve created now, I don’t take it back at all. I think this is still the best decision.

“I told coach (Kirby) Smart that the other day. I just want to thank him and the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play,” Smith continued. “You could look at it both ways: Oh, you came from the national championship team to a team that’s not winning. But obviously I don’t look at that, I still think we have opportunities in the future to come, and we could still be a great team.”

After only starting two games in three years at Alabama, Smith, a senior, has started all six games for the Bulldogs at the nickel position and is fifth on the team with 26 tackles. He also has an interception and three pass breakups to boot.
