Georgia got a real scare last week as true freshman early enrollee quarterback D’Wan Mathis had to undergo emergency surgery to remove a cyst on his brain.

While that situation had to have been terrifying for the young man, on the bright side, he had world-class medical attention in Athens which played a part in his diagnosis and the UGA medical staff went into action immediately to correct the issue. Thankfully, Mathis is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

During his Tuesday appearance at the annual SEC spring meetings from Destin, Florida, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart provided the latest update on the freshman’s status.

“D’Wan has been awesome, his family has been awesome. He’s handled everything with great class. D’Wan’s doing great, he got out of the hospital yesterday. He’s begun rehab and therapy,” Smart said on Tuesday in a YouTube video posted by UGA Sports.

While Mathis’ return to the team isn’t what concerns Smart, he did note his young quarterback will be back whenever he is able to do so.

“We are expecting a full recovery and the timeline is the least of our concern right now,” Smart added. “We are worried about his health.”

This encouraging update comes after Mathis provided an update on his status by tweeted out this comment on Monday:

“Dawg Nation I’m good thanks for checking on me I’ll be back sooner than ever and better never question gods timing! Major set back for a major comeback 💯and to my teammates keep working I can’t wait to play football again❤️#Godawgs”
