We have an unfortunate story to share from Athens as Georgia true freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis has reportedly undergone emergency surgery.

The Michigan native signed with Kirby Smart’s program during the early signing period and enrolled early in Athens in order to compete on campus during spring football. With Justin Fields no longer on the roster, Mathis added some valuable depth to the team’s QB room behind starter Jake Fromm. Before making his decision during the early signing period, Mathis, rated as a four-star prospect coming out of Oak Park High School, was committed to Ohio State.

Now Mathis’ football career has taken a backseat to his health as Mike Griffith of Dawg Nation is reporting that the freshman underwent surgery to remove a cyst that was on his brain. The surgery took place in Athens on Thursday. Mathis remains in ICU following the surgery, according to Griffith. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and Mathis’ stay in the ICU is being described as a precaution.

That’s great news and we certainly hope Mathis recovers quickly and returns to his team as soon as possible. We’ll keep you updated on Mathis’ status as more information is released.
