Things may not have worked out for D’Wan Mathis in Athens but the former Georgia quarterback appears to be thriving at Temple.

Following his first spring camp with the Owls, Temple head coach Rod Carey has named Mathis the team’s starting quarterback.

Mathis had to beat out former Iowa State quarterback Re-al Mitchell — who was an Elite 11 Finals QB coming out of high school — to win the job. Mitchell transferred to Temple following the 2019 season and played for Temple last fall.

During his time in Athens, Mathis completed 12 of 30 passes for 89 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Mathis started for Georgia in the 2020 season opener against Arkansas but was quickly replaced by Stetson Bennett to close out the game against the Razorbacks.

Bennett started for Georgia the following week against Auburn. In November, Mathis announced his decision to transfer from Georgia and in December announced he would play for Temple.

Mathis was rated a four-star prospect out of Oak Park High School in Belleville, Mich., in the 2019 recruiting cycle. He was headed to play for Ohio State before Justin Fields left Georgia for the Buckeyes, which ironically cleared up a spot in Athens for Mathis.
