One of the more hyped aspects of Georgia’s program in recent years is the mammoth offensive line, and slew of 5-star recruits under assistant Sam Pittman and coach Kirby Smart.

“I want to talk about them,” Smart said after the second overtime loss to South Carolina, according to 960 The Ref. “I want talk about them being the best in the country. But they gotta go out there and do it.”

Still reeling from the 20-17 upset from South Carolina in the second overtime after Rodrigo Blankenship missed a field goal attempt wide left from 42 yards, Smart said he needs more from the offensive line.

Not only is Georgia one of the biggest offensive lines in the country, it is bigger than the average NFL line, which is 314.8 pounds, while Georgia’s starting offensive line averages 328.6 pounds. Georgia has signed five 5-star offensive line recruits during the Smart era, which many fans have pointed out is considerably more than the one signed by Mark Richt’s staffs.

Georgia rushed for 173 yards on 43 attempts against South Carolina, but also yielded 3 sacks to South Carolina. Georgia QB Jake Fromm also lost his helmet on one play where the pocket collapsed around him. There was also the bad exchange that led to a fumble that the Gamecocks recovered on the first play of the fourth quarter.

“We’ve got to go out there and occupy the line of scrimmage and win the line of scrimmage over and over,” Smart said. “In this league, it’s tough to do that all the time, because they’ve got good players, too.”
