Respect the Specs, Georgia has a new scoring leader.

One of the more popular Georgia players in recent history, kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, made a third field goal on Saturday against Texas A&M to make him the career scoring leader at Georgia with 415 points. Blankenship is second all-time in the SEC behind former Auburn kicker Daniel Carlson, who had 480 points. Blankenship is known around Georgia by his nicknames “Hot Rod” and “Respect the Specs,” a nod to the glasses he wears during games.

Blankenship passed former Georgia kickers Blair Walsh (412 points), who kicked from 2008-11, on Saturday, and the next top kickers are Billy Bennett (2000-03) 409 and Marshall Morgan (2012-15) 407.

The record-setting kick was a 37-yard field goal and made it 16-3 Georgia early in the second half.

It’s been a season of moving up the charts. Against Notre Dame, he passed his former coach and hall of famer Kevin Butler to move into fourth place on UGA’s list of all-time career scoring leaders

Blankenship is a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the nation’s top placekicker, and entering Saturday, Blankenship ranked 14th nationally and second in SEC in scoring at 9.2 points per game. Blankenship was already UGA’s career field goal percentage leader, as those kicks against the Aggies improved his own mark from the 83.72 percentage he had entering the game.

Blankenship is also one of three finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on.
