Former Georgia QB Stetson Bennett receives depth chart update entering NFL season
Former Georgia QB Stetson Bennett has done enough to convince the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff to earn the No. 2 job behind starter Matthew Stafford for the first two weeks of the NFL season.
Stafford’s normal backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, is serving a two-game suspension which has opened the door for Bennett to rise the depth chart.
“He did a good job,” head coach Sean McVay said on the Rams official website. “I think he got a body of work in terms of both of those games going from wire to wire. I think he’s done really well in some of the practice settings. And when you do look at it, you’re obviously very fortunate to have Jimmy that will be coming back on Week 3, but he’s done enough that we feel good about him for those first couple weeks.”
Bennett dressed but did not play Saturday against Houston, as Dresser Winn got all of the reps at quarterback. Bennett finished the preseason completing 41 of 69 pass attempts for 437 yards with 2 touchdowns against 5 interceptions while handling all of the snaps at quarterback in each of the first two preseason games.
The former Georgia star led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship victories in 2021 and 2022 and was named MVP of the CFP National Championship in 2021. He was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and was drafted by the Rams in the 4th round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The former UGA QB stepped away from the game due to mental health issues in 2022 but is back and had found a way onto the 53-man roster.
“Stafford’s normal backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, is serving a two-game suspension which has opened the door for Bennett to rise the depth chart.”
So after 2 games will he go back to the practice squad since the NFLPA just vetoed the Emergency 3rd QB rule change?
