Nick Chubb and Sony Michel are expected to do the bulk of the work out of Georgia’s backfield, but it appears freshman RB Elijah Holyfield should not be counted out from seeing playing time in 2016.

Jeff Sentell of DawgNation.com recently caught up Woodward Academy assistant Ryan Davis to talk about Holyfield. Davis passed along what he’s heard from Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart.

“Kirby told me that Elijah has impressed everyone already,” Davis said. “They have been pleased by what they have seen so far.”

As Saturday Down South noted in its in-depth look at Georgia’s running game, Holyfield’s workload in the fall could depend on how Chubb is brought back along:

Even if (Chubb) needs to be eased into the rotation, the only missing piece from the core backups from a season ago is Marshall. And he’ll be replaced by late signee Brian Herrien and Elijah Holyfield, a pair of wide-bodied bruisers with surprising speed — and, by all accounts, Holyfield had both of his ears intact when he arrived for move-in day June 1.

The four-star Atlanta product listed at 5-foot-10, 204 pounds was ranked as the No. 6 running back of the 2016 class by 247Sports. Holyfield enrolled at Georgia earlier this month.

Last month, he gave a wide-ranging interview in which he discussed his recruitment process, why he doesn’t like Florida signees and many other topics.
