That ugly loss last Saturday to LSU has taken the wind out of the sails of the Georgia Bulldogs just a bit, but at the bye week, this still has been a fun and exciting season for a team that still has title aspirations.

The Bulldogs are 6-1 overall, and 4-1 in the SEC. They are tied at the top of the SEC East with one-loss Florida and Kentucky, and they are Georgia’s next two opponents. Their first goal — winning the SEC East — is laid out right in front of them.

Here’s a few of the best things we’ve seen from Georgia so far this season:

Best Offensive Player

Jake Fromm, quarterback: Even though Fromm had his worst game as a Bulldog last Saturday at LSU, he’s still been very good all season. He’s on pace to break the school record for completion percentage, and his 170.4 passer rating is the second-best in school history, just barely behind Aaron Murray’s 172 school record. He’s a veteran who knows the offense well, and he’s handled this Justin Fields threat with maturity and diplomacy. Going forward, it’s going to be interesting to see how well he bounces back from adversity after Saturday’s downer.

Best Defensive Player

Deandre Baker, cornerback: Baker has been so good at cornerback that most opposing offensive coordinators don’t even try to test him much anymore. He had two big interceptions early in the year and he continues to prove that he might very well be the first cornerback off the board in the 2019 NFL Draft. He plays with a swagger, and he’s a great team leader. Expect many more big plays from him down the stretch if offenses try to go his way.

Best Special Teams Player

Mecole Hardman, return man: Hardman brings drama and excitement to every return. He had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown against Middle Tennessee and a 34-yard kickoff return against Missouri. He’s been solid overall in returning punts and kickoffs and he has that great mentality that every return man needs because he tries to break every return for a score. There might be more to come this season.

Best Trend

Scoring defensive touchdowns early: In three consecutive games (South Carolina, Middle Tennessee, Missouri), Georgia scored a defense touchdown early in the first quarter to give the team a lead. There’s nothing better than playing from ahead, and the Bulldogs have been taking advantage of that. Prior to the LSU game, they had only trailed for 15 seconds all season. Those big early defensive plays were a big part of that.

Nicest Surprise

Elijah Holyfield, running back: Georgia has incredible depth at running back, with four true potential stars. The plan was always going to be to share carries, but it was D’Andre Swift that we thought would be the featured guy. Instead it’s Holyfield who’s leading the team in rushing, and he’s a fan favorite because he runs so hard. He has 495 yards so far and four touchdowns, and he’s averaging an impressive 7.5 yards per carry.
