Through the first two days of the first Early Signing Period, no team fared better than the Georgia Bulldogs, who have signed the nation’s No. 1 overall recruiting class, per 247Sports.

Kirby Smart’s coaching staff has landed a whopping six 5-star recruits and has supplemented that incredible haul with an equally impressive 12 4-star players.

Even as the Bulldogs prepare for their College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against Oklahoma on New Year’s Day, they’ve managed to leapfrog Ohio State for the No. 1 spot in the recruiting rankings. If Georgia can hold onto the No. 1 ranking and also win a national title — well, that would go down as one of the best years in program history.

However, Smart and his staff still have some work to do before the 2018 classes are finalized, as there’s still one glaring area of concern that needs to be addressed before the start of next season.

That, of course, is the linebacker position. Looking at the Bulldogs’ current class, there are a couple of talented linebackers signed — No. 1 OLB Adam Anderson (a 5-star prospect) and 4-star signee Channing Tindall.

Those players are some of the best athletes in the nation at the linebacker position, and will be key pieces of the Georgia defense for years to come, but Smart needs more quantity to go with his quality at that spot.

That’s because current star LB Roquan Smith likely will leave early to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft, where he’ll almost certainly be a first-round pick. Adding to the Bulldogs’ losses is the fact that other key contributors in the linebacking corps — Davin Bellamy, Lorenzo Carter and Reggie Carter — are all seniors.

That leaves four key linebacking positions that need to be addressed this offseason. Only two experienced linebackers — D’Andre Walker and Natrez Patrick (barring any complications from his recent legal case, which will keep him out of the Rose Bowl) — will return to the Georgia defense next year, so whomever the Bulldogs bring in as part of their 2018 class will be expected to learn quickly.

Again, Anderson and Tindall have the pedigrees to become instant impact players, but adding depth to that position before finalizing this year’s group of recruits will be important for Smart and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

JJ Peterson, a 4-star prospect, is the state of Georgia’s top unsigned linebacker, but he’s likely going to sign with Alabama or Tennessee. Therefore, the Bulldogs should set their sights on a couple of other in-state linebackers to fill out their 2018 class — 3-star players Quin Williams and Caleb Kelly.

Neither has gotten much interest from Georgia to this point, but seeing as how the Bulldogs don’t have many spots left in their 2018 recruiting class, they need to focus on linebackers. Currently, the Bulldogs have 20 players signed, with four commits unsigned. That leaves one unclaimed spot in the class, assuming all four current commits sign.

Based on the four linebackers who will likely leave the program after the CFP run, and the uncertain status of Patrick moving forward, linebacker is a position of need heading into February, and it’s one Smart and company can’t ignore as they try to continue building a dynasty in Athens.
