Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker has followed this year’s Georgia team, and said it reminds him of some of the teams he played on in the early 1980s.

Walker offered his thoughts on this year’s team during a visit to Columbus, Ga. to speak at an “Up & Motivated” seminar. According to Jordan D. Hill of the Macon Telegraph, Walker said that there’s “no doubt” Georgia has a chance to win the national championship. When asked if his alma mater has a chance to win it all, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner sounded nothing but confident.

“There’s no doubt,” said Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, who added that the Notre Dame game reminded him of the old Junkyard Dawgs defense of his day.

Walker described freshman quarterback Jake Fromm as a leader, which is something a championship team needs.

“You watch the way he plays, but you also consider that he’s got the pedigree,” Walker said. “You watch the things he’s done in the past, and you tell yourself that the guy’s done it before.”

Walker advised the current Georgia players to stick together and play as a unit, something his 1980 national championship team did. He said that’s the way Alabama plays, and you can’t win championships without playing together. But senior leadership is the key to pulling that off.

“I think in 1980, it was an interesting time,” Walker said. “We had a great, great senior class, which this group has as well. We had a lot of good talent there.”
