When Georgia faces Tennessee on Saturday, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart will be coaching against multiple familiar faces. When he was asked about it at his Tuesday press conference, Smart pointed to it being part of the Nick Saban coaching tree.

“I think you’ve got to be careful,” Smart said. “I think with the unique deal with the SEC where there’s a large tree that comes from one coach, there’s just a lot of guys, whether you’re playing (former Florida head coach Jim) McElwain, you’re playing (South Carolina head coach Will) Muschamp, you’re playing (Missouri offensive coordinator) Derek Dooley, you’ve got to be careful that you’re not chasing ghosts and I learned that early on, that you could go out there and overthink all this, and get into all that, and then you’re outthinking yourself. At the end of the day, what can I do to get my guys to play at a high level and efficiently? Efficiently is no busts, because that’s what you’re trying to avoid is mistakes, and that’s what we’re trying to do, not overcomplicate things.”

Georgia won last year’s Smart vs. Jeremy Pruitt battle of former Alabama assistants. This year, there are more familiar faces on the UT staff, including former Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and Smart’s former Alabama colleague Derrick Ansley.
