Jake Fromm has sustained two injuries at the lake this offseason. He had a fishing lure stuck in his leg in May, then the Georgia quarterback broke his left hand during an incident earlier this month.

Some coaches may get upset if their starting quarterback gets injured in a non-football-related activity, putting their health in jeopardy in a controllable situation that could have been prevented.

Not Kirby Smart.

In fact, Smart discussed Fromm’s recent lake injuries at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Tuesday and stated that incidents such as Fromm’s wouldn’t have even been discussed in the past.

“It was a simple conversation, really. I talked with his dad and texted with him, but I don’t know if you call them lake mishaps — they’re kids being kids,” Smart said. “The only difference is you know about it. Take 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, when I was at the University of Georgia, if we were doing something out there on the water, none of y’all would know. So why do you know exactly what happened? Because of social media. That’s the only difference.”

And Smart would actually rather have Fromm and his players participating in outdoor activities rather than staying inside playing video games during the summer.

“We’re acting like this is a big deal, but it’s only a big deal because you know about it,” Smart said. “Things like this happen all the time that you don’t know about. We had guys with broken arms and broken feet and broken wrists and broken hands in the summer, and nobody knew about it. I think it’s great that he goes out and does those things. I think it’s awesome, because it means he’s not sitting at home playing Fortnite all day. He’s socializing, he’s going out, he’s doing things.”

Perhaps Smart would have a slightly different opinion if Fromm sustained an injury that prevented him from taking the field for regular-season games. However, Fromm broke his non-throwing hand and isn’t going to miss any summer workouts.
