It was a rainy day in Athens on Saturday as Georgia conducted its second scrimmage of the spring, but that was a good thing for coach Kirby Smart.

Smart said Georgia typically has a game or two per season which is played under a rainy circumstance or forecast. So the Bulldogs got in some wet ball practice. Georgia finished inside the indoor practice facility after it started the scrimmage in Sanford Stadium.

“I was pleased with the effort and enthusiasm at the scrimmage,” Smart said. “Probably wasn’t the best execution we had in terms of offense and defense.”

Georgia’s been dinged up at running back, Smart said, but Kendall Milton did a nice job with physical runs on Saturday, the coach said.

On the defensive front, Jordan Davis is faced with conditioning and weight control, but Smart said he knows that.

“He’s worked really hard on that, we’ve got to get him to cut some more for him to be elite,” Smart said. “The game of football is played so differently now. There’s certain games he’s a much larger factor in, some teams will try to make him a no factor when they’re spraying the ball out, throwing the ball a lot, playing loose plays. It’s harder for him to be a contributor when the ball game speeds up. It’s critical that he get in the best shape of his life. Part of the reason he decided to come back was to be in great shape so he could create some more value and that’s one of the big things that he’s working on.”

For G-Day next week, Smart said he hopes the offense excels in decision making.

“We want to be explosive, we want to be a vertical passing team,” Smart said. “We’re not into making excuses about what receivers are in, what receivers aren’t, I think we’ve got good receivers in. Can they compete really well, that’ll be the expectation every time we go on that field. Be able to attack people vertically and throw the ball and catch the ball.”
