Kirby Smart will see a few familiar faces when he looks across the sideline on Saturday against Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech’s offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, was a quality control assistant for Georgia from 2020 to 2022. Its defensive coordinator, Kevin Sherrer, was at Georgia from 2014 to 2017.

“Obviously there’s several guys on his staff that we have worked with. A lot of overlap,” Smart said in his press conference Monday. “Buster’s done a tremendous job for them and Kevin taking over the defense, kind of midstream there, has done a really good job.”

Smart had high praise for Faulkner for the work he has done for Georgia Tech’s offense.

“He’s done a phenomenal job and I think he’d be the first to tell you that it’s not he that gets all the credit,” Smart said. “He has a great staff of offensive coaches with him, they do a great job at offensive line, it’s dirty, nasty physical.”

But the familiarity goes beyond the coaching staff. Wide receiver Dominick Blaylock spent his first 3 seasons at Georgia before transferring to Georgia Tech. Smart praised his character ahead of the meeting.

“Selflessness, probably the No. 1 thing that stands out,” Smart said. “Toughness. He’s such a great competitor. Dom’s just one of those that he’ never says anything. He doesn’t complain, he doesn’t moan, he goes to work every day.”
