The SEC football community was rocked by scary news out of Georgia Saturday night when it was reported that UGA defensive back Richard LeCounte was injured in a car accident. More details on the accident, LeCounte’s injuries and timetable to return to action.

There were multiple vehicles and a dirt bike involved in the accident Athens-Clarke County Sgt. John Q. Williams told ESPN’s Harry Lyles Jr. LeCounte was taken to the hospital.

Lyles shares that sources told ESPN’s Mark Schlabach that LeCounte is expected to miss “at least a few weeks” after suffering a shoulder injury plus several cuts and bruises in the accident, indicating he will be out for Saturday’s rivalry showdown with Florida in Jacksonville.

LeCounte, a team captain, recorded 13 tackles, a career-best, and 3 pass breakups in UGA’s 14-3 win at Kentucky.

An SEC First Team preseason selection, LeCounte has 26 tackles in 5 games this season. He is also one of 19 players currently tied for the national lead in interceptions with 3.

Heading into his fourth season at Georgia, LeCounte was named to pre-season watch lists for the Bednarik Award (collegiate defensive player of the year), Paycom Jim Thorpe Award (nation’s top DB) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player).
