Todd Monken has been coaching college football for a long time. In fact, his experience coaching in the sport stretches all the way back to the late 1980s.

Yet, despite his lengthy track record in the sport, he’s never seen an offensive line quite like the one he inherited this offseason in Athens.

Thanks to the recruiting ability of former offensive line coach Sam Pittman, and the group’s current position coach, Matt Luke, Monken has a ton of talent to work with this fall despite the fact the unit is replacing a pair of first-round picks and a transfer to a division rival.

During his first media availability of training camp, Monken was asked to comment on his big offensive line.

“You’re exactly right, getting here, we got big guys,” Monken said. “The good news is they’re big and athletic. I mean, it’s like, I guess every position, big, fast, physical, smart, tough. Everybody’s looking for the same guys, obviously in this league, you have to have guys that are able to move people up front, and still be able to move their feet and be able to pass protect.

“It’s a really really good group. Obviously, we lost a number of players that he either came out early or transferred, but it’s not for lack of talent, it’s just a matter of reps. Getting our guys in the right spots. But you’re right, we have good looking players, as good as anywhere I’ve been in college. It’s impressive and  I’m excited to see our players that continue to develop.”

That’s high praise from Georgia’s new offensive coordinator, but now that he’s finally getting the opportunity to work with the lineman on the practice field, he’s finding out what it’s like to work with some of the finest linemen high school football has produced in recent seasons.
