Jacob Eason has been making plays with his arm all season long. But Saturday against Tennessee, Georgia’s true freshman quarterback did it in an unorthodox way.

When running back Sony Michel fumbled at the goal line, Eason put his body on the line and reached out to recover the ball in the end zone. The score put the No. 25 Bulldogs ahead of the No. 11 Volunteers 17-0 late in the second quarter and went down as the quarterback’s first career rushing touchdown.

The play came one drive after Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd fumbled on the goal line, only for Georgia to recover. The Volunteers, however, responded to Eason’s touchdown by marching down the field to make it 17-7 at halftime.

Eason had already earned the respect of coaches and teammates for his play under center, but he probably gained even more of their trust by sacrificing his body to recover Michel’s fumble.
